Effect of Root Zone Temperature on the Yield and Quality of Sweet Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) in Hydroponics

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of root zone temperature on the quality and yield of sweet pepper cultivars in hydroponics. Fresh weights of shoot and root were significantly affected by cultivars and root zone temperature. Growth was more inhibited by low temperature than by high temperature. Sugar content was influenced by root zone temperature but not by cultivars. The similar result was obtained in vitamin C content. The highest content was obtained at 23¡É in ¢¥Colombo¢¥ and at 28¡É in ¢¥RS 90075¢¥. Potassium, calcium, and magnesium contents in fruits were not influenced by cultivars and root zone temperature but phosphate content was affected by root zone temperature, showing lower content at 13 and 33¡É. Differences in the length and diameter of fruits according to cultivars and root zone temperature were not significant, either. More number of fruits were obtained at 18¡28¡É, and higher yield was obtained at 23¡28¡É. It is concluded that 23¡É root zone temperature was economical and suitable for hydroponic culture of sweet pepper.
